Every time your furnace or air handler runs, air passes through the filter before circulating through your home. A quality filter removes airborne particles while protecting the blower motor, evaporator coil, and ductwork from dirt buildup.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a standardized rating that measures how effectively a filter captures airborne particles. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles it can capture.

Upgraded HVAC filters

A MERV 8 filter is a great choice for many homes, removing dust, lint, pollen, and pet hair with low airflow resistance that is easy on most systems. A MERV 11 filter is a significant upgrade that captures pet dander, mold spores, fine dust, and larger allergens, making it a strong option for families with pets. A MERV 13 filter is often considered the gold standard for residential filtration, capturing smoke particles, fine dust, bacteria, many virus-carrying droplets, and allergens. Because MERV 13 filters create more airflow resistance, we confirm your equipment can maintain proper airflow before upgrading.

Media air cleaners

Instead of a standard 1-inch filter, many homeowners upgrade to a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet. These systems offer a much larger filtering surface, better airflow, longer filter life, superior filtration, and fewer filter changes. They often use MERV 11 to 16 filters while maintaining a lower pressure drop than a standard 1-inch filter.

UV light systems

Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light damages the DNA and RNA of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce, and it installs inside the HVAC system where air passes by the light. Coil UV lights shine continuously on the indoor evaporator coil to prevent mold growth, keep the coil cleaner, improve system efficiency, reduce musty odors, and lower maintenance requirements. Air stream UV lights are installed so moving air passes directly through the light to reduce airborne bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. Because air moves quickly through the ductwork, exposure time is short, so these systems work best combined with quality filtration.

Air scrubber systems

Air scrubbers are among the most comprehensive whole-home solutions available. Unlike filters, which only capture particles as air passes through them, air scrubbers actively treat the air circulating throughout the home. Many systems combine UV light, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), and ionization technologies, and depending on the design they can help reduce dust, pet dander, smoke particles, odors, mold spores, bacteria, some viruses, and certain VOCs. Some systems also help particles clump together so they are more easily captured by your HVAC filter.

Ionization systems

Needlepoint bipolar ionization systems release charged ions into the airflow. These ions can cause fine particles to cluster together so they are easier to filter, help reduce some odors, and reduce certain airborne contaminants. Research on effectiveness varies by technology and installation, so it is worth choosing products with independent testing and discussing expectations with a qualified HVAC professional.
